Maybe try a deck of cards which actually might be more difficult than a phone book, those cards can be a bit slippery. If you are not ready for ripping the phone book yet start by ripping magazines, use the proper method and keep practicing.

Then there are nails and steel rods. When you bend nails you need to use your whole body. Bending nails will really show your arm strength or lack of it. Learn the proper method, start off by bending something easy and work your way up.

Check around your area for some contests, grip strength contests are getting more frequent and there might be one close by your area at some time.
